Venues chosen for Socceroos vital month on the road to 2010

FFAWith the Socceroos sitting top of the 2010 World Cup qualifying group with four points from two games so far, the announcement of the venues for the remaining home games has got soccer fans around the country buzzing with excitement.

The two home matches that are both taking place in June will see the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane play host to the Australia v Iraq match on Sunday the 1st of June whilst the ANZ Stadium in Sydney is the venue for the vital last match against China which is scheduled for Sunday 22 June.

The Socceroos also play away to Iraq on June 7th with the game being played in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and the 14th of June sees Australia playing away to Qatar, in the city of Doha.

The game against Iraq in Brisbane will be Australia’s first World Cup Qualifier in the state since 1992 and there is likely to be a huge expectation in the build up to this match, particularly as the match will be crucial to Australia’s chances of progressing from the group. Iraq are the current Asian Cup holders and they defeated Australia 3-1 in Bangkok en route to clinching the title, so no doubt the Brisbane match will offer the Socceroos a chance of revenge.

If Australia’s qualification hopes come down to the last match, at least the nation have a home game to end with and the ANZ Stadium is likely to be filled to capacity for the visit of China.

Progression through this group will place Australia in the final qualifying group of five with 2 places for the 2010 World Cup up for grabs so the tension is going to be at fever pitch come June when the Socceroos go all out for glory.
