Fred to be Wellington’s guest
Wellington Phoenix have announced the signing of former Melbourne Victory star Helbert Frederico “Fred” Carreiro da Silva for six matches as a guest player.
The Brazilian midfielder has been playing in the MLS at DC United but will be available for the Phoenix for six games, starting with their clash against Newcastle Jets on Sunday week.
Phoenix chairman and owner Terry Serepisos said the signing of Fred had reaffirmed the club’s ambitions and ability to attract world-class players.
“It’s confirmation that the Phoenix is here for the long haul. Given the professional approach we have taken from day one, the club’s profile and reputation continues to go from strength to strength internationally, and that’s why we have been able to sign a player the likes of Fred.
“We took our time to identify what type of player we required and to find a person who would be able to contribute. We believe Fred will prove invaluable in maintaining our good momentum throughout the middle and latter stages of this season.”
Fred is scheduled to arrive in Wellington on Monday and will begin training with the Wellington team for the match against Newcastle on Sunday, November 23.
He is set to line up against his former team, Melbourne Victory, at Westpac Stadium the following Friday.
Fred’s final game for the Phoenix will be in Round 17 against the Queensland Roar in Brisbane.
Vidmar inducted into FFA Hall of Fame
Aurelio Vidmar has been named the 2008 inductee into the Hall of Champions at FFA’s Football Hall of Fame.
Vidmar’s playing career saw him appear twice in the old National Soccer League either side of stints with overseas clubs in Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain and Japan.
After returning to the NSL, Vidmar was part of the Adelaide United’s inaugural A-League squad, where he made 27 appearances before announcing his retirement as a player and becoming assistant coach at the club.
Vidmar played a total of 454 club games, scoring 126 goals. He also appeared 53 times and scored 18 goals for the Socceroos.
Farina praises Moore’s commitment
Roar coach Frank Farina still believes in the Queensland skipper playing very soon and denied he’d played his last game for Australia.
“Not at all, it just depends on what course of treatment if any Craig has to go through, but it’s not going to change him as a player,” the Roar coach said.
“When he comes back and gets on the park, which I know he’s desperate to do already, it will be the same Craig Moore, it won’t affect his playing style at all.
“I wouldn’t imagine it would affect his (place in the) national team.
“As long as Craig Moore is playing good football I’m sure he’ll be one of the first ones in the national squad.
“Craig thinks he’s going to play in two weeks and with that sort of attitude I can’t see him being out for too long.”
Moore’s eight-month international hiatus was largely due to his doubts about whether his fitness would hold up over a long A-League off-season.
But his strong start to the 2008-09 season and a renewed hunger to play top-level football has him aiming for the 2010 World Cup.
“Craig is in the best shape physically that I’ve seen in many years,” Farina said.
“Once he gets the green light it won’t take him long to get back into the rhythm of things.
“He’s a fighter, it’s as simple as that and he’ll fight this through.”

Socceroo squad reshuffle
Pim Verbeek has included three more A-League players – Jade North, Mark Milligan and Mile Jedinak in the squad selected to play Bahrain next week in Manama.
Earlier Verbeek named a 24-man squad that included Vincenzo Grella, Matthew Spiranovic and Moore, all of whom are now ruled out of the match.
Grella sustained an injury in his match for Blackburn Rovers last weekend while Spiranovic suffered an ankle injury during training with his German club Nurnberg. Moore has been ruled out after undergoing surgery for testicular cancer in Brisbane yesterday, announced by his manager on Wednesday evening.
Moore diagnosed with cancer
Socceroos and Queensland Roar defender Craig Moore has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming 2010 World Cup qualifier against Bahrain, after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Moore has been ruled out after undergoing surgery for testicular cancer in Brisbane yesterday, announced by his manager on Wednesday evening.
“At this point there are no thoughts regarding injury replacement players and the club will be guided by medical advice on a timeframe for Craig’s return to training and playing,” a Queensland Roar media statement said.
“Craig’s health and wellbeing are of the utmost importance to the club and we will offer him and his family all the support required in order to help him make a full recovery.”
Verbeek said he was taken aback when he heard the news about Moore.
“It’s always a shock to hear of a diagnosis like this but I am encouraged by the prognosis from the medical practitioner. I speak for the entire team in wishing him a speedy recovery,” he said.

Van Egmond cops FFA sanction
Football Federation Australia has announced today that Newcastle Jets’ coach Gary van Egmond has been found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute.
Van Egmond was found guilty of breaching clause 2.1 of the FFA National Code of Conduct and was issued a sanction for four matches and a fine of $2,000.
However two of the matches and the fine have been suspended until the end of the 2008-09 Finals series due to “van Egmond’s contrition, unreserved apology and previous exemplary record.”
Therefore the Jets’ coach will serve a two match suspension unless he re-offends this season, with the sanction applying to rounds 12 and 13 of the A-League.
Van Egmond will be restricted in his access to players, the field of play and media within a five hour period on match days.
