Rhys Williams picks Socceroos over Wales

Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek looks to have secured the services of promising Middlesbrough defender Rhys Williams after the youngster turned down Wales to pledge his international future to Australia.

The Perth-born 20-year-old, who has a Welsh grandfather, has played 10 times for the Wales under-21 side but is yet to kick a ball for the senior line-up despite being called into the squad several times.

Embattled gambling giant Intralot, which has had a disastrous debut year in Victoria, has been announced as Melbourne Victory’s new sponsor.

Gold Coast United to take on EPL’s Fulham FC

MARK Schwarzer’s Fulham is bound for the Glitter Strip and a glamour clash against Clive Palmer’s Gold Coast United.

The July 9 duel at Skilled Park will pit Socceroo against Socceroo with Fulham keeper Schwarzer up against United’s marquee magician Jason Culina in a game Palmer expects to attract an audience in excess of 20,000.

Recoba looking to head downunder

Perth Glory coach Dave Mitchell has revealed the A-League club have opened talks with Alvaro Recoba’s agent to bring the former Inter Milan attacker to the club.

Mitchell returned to Australia this week following a month-long scouting mission in Europe as the Glory look to fill their vacant marquee player position ahead of the new season in August.
