A-League season opener ends in a stalemate

AN INJURY time spot kick from Joel Griffiths has helped the Newcastle Jets to a 1-1 draw against the Central Coast Mariners in tonight’s A-League openers.

Matt Simon looked to have helped his side to 3-points when he opened the scoring late on in the 87th minute when he scored with his head.

Simon arrived back in Australia only earlier that day after returning from the Beijing Olympics.
Despite the goal, the Jets deservedly got a share of the spoils when Brad Porter brought down Elrich in the box just before the full-time whistle.

Joel Griffiths stepped up to confidently put away his first goal of the season by sending Ref-Beater Vukovic the wrong way.
