Embattled gambling giant Intralot, which has had a disastrous debut year in Victoria, has been announced as Melbourne Victory’s new sponsor.

In a surprise move, the Intralot brand will be splashed across the front of the Victory jumper for the next two A-League seasons in a $2 million deal.

The Greek gambling company has suffered dire sales figures and is tipped to fall a staggering $226 million behind budget in its first year of operation.

A mid-year Brumby Government review will determine whether the company is fined or even stripped of its 10-year Victorian licence.

“We’re pleased to welcome Intralot Australia into our organisation and see many exciting collaborative opportunities in the future,” Melbourne Victory Chairman Geoff Lord said today.

“They are an emerging company in Victoria and we look forward to helping them grow their brand.”

Intralot Australia General Manager Leo Watling said the Victory partnership is the first of several new initiatives aimed at relaunching the company.

“Intralot is proud to be undertaking its first major Victorian sponsorship with the A-League’s most successful club and one that has fought and won challenges similar to those confronted by our company,” Mr Watling said.

Melbourne Victory captain Kevin Muscat has no case to answer after a confrontation with an assistant referee at half time during the A-League match between Perth and Melbourne at the weekend.

The Melbourne skipper was involved in a heated verbal exchange with referee Peter Green at the end of the first half, when assistant referee Michael Negus attempted to intervene.

Muscat appeared to push Negus away, however no action was taken at the time and because the incident did not escape the attention of the referee it thus falls outside the jurisdiction of the independent Match Review Panel.

Wellington Goalkeeper Glen Moss will join Melbourne Victory as of the 2009/10 A-League season.

Wellington Goalkeeper Glen Moss will join Melbourne Victory as of the 2009/10 A-League season.

The New Zealand international, who is also an Australian citizen, will see the current season out with the Phoenix before moving to Victory on a two-year deal.

Moss has so far played 26 matches for the Phoenix, in addition to nine matches for the New Zealand Knights in the 2005/06 season, and has regularly battled with fellow goalkeeper Mark Paston for a starting spot in the Wellington lineup.

First-choice Melbourne ‘keeper Michael Theoklitos is off-contract at the end of the 2008/09 season, however Victory Football Operations Manager Gary Cole said the club is keen to retain Theoklitos as one of three goalkeepers alongside Moss and Mitchell Langerak for next season.

“We’re hoping Michael will stay,” Cole said.

“Michael’s made no secret of the fact he’s got ambitions to play in Europe and if something comes up we obviously don’t want to leave ourselves short.

“He’s requested to put off contract negotiations until the end of the season and we just think we’re in a great position right now with Michael, Mitchell and Glen.

“Our goalkeeping ranks couldn’t be better.”

Melbourne Victory slumped to their first loss of Australia’s A-League season, and had a player sent off for the third consecutive game in a 2-0 loss to Queensland Roar here on Sunday.

A-League table standings

Late goals from substitutes Tahj Minniecon and Michael Zullo sealed Roar’s victory and ended a weekend when Victory and Sydney FC both lost their unbeaten starts after six rounds.

Minniecon broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute and Zullo scored in injury time, after Costa Rican midfielder Carlos Hernandez was sent off for two yellow card offences in the space of ten minutes in the second half.

It was the third straight match Melbourne finished with ten men, following a win over Adelaide United and a draw with Central Coast which also featured red cards.

The Victory and Sydney FC now share the top of the A-League after Sydney’s shock 2-1 loss to lowly Wellington Phoenix in Wellington on Sunday. Both have the same goals for and against and goal difference.

Phoenix finally rediscovered their goalscoring form to record their first win of the season after Alex Brosque had put Sydney ahead in the 20th minute. Former AFC Wimbledon striker Shane Smeltz equalised just before half-time with a header at the near post, before Tim Brown got the winner in the 76th minute.

Adelaide United celebrated their midweek Asian Champions League quarter-final win over Japan’s Kashima Antlers with a 2-0 win over champions Newcastle Jets at home on Saturday. Brazilian striker Cristiano claimed a second half double to give Adelaide all the points.

Central Coast Mariners had a convincing 4-1 home win over Perth Glory on Friday.
