North to Korea

Jade North was granted a release from his contract by the Fury late yesterday, with the club opting not to stand in his way.

Even though North is still signed with Newcastle Jets till June 30th it is believed he has a get-out clause in his Fury’s Contract.

“Jade had a wonderful opportunity to pursue a career internationally, and we did not want to stand in his way,” Matheson said.

“It is perfectly legitimate for players to aspire to have experience overseas to try to further their career, as well as gain some valuable life experience, and Jade is at that point in his life.

“He has a good offer from an overseas club and we’re happy for him to pursue his dream.”

But Matheson told AAP: “The contract wasn’t as reported, what we have done is agreed to let him go, it was a mutual agreement.

“We spoke to him, he said the opportunity was there, we said it would be better that he chased it up and he gave us plenty of time to find another marquee player so we let him go pretty quickly.

“He’s a good mate of mine and it will remain that way, if he comes back he is welcome here any time.”

North’s agent Sam Ayoub that this deal with the Koreans would keep him in Pim Verbeeks plans.

“Jade’s always aspired to play overseas and an opportunity came up through our agents in Asia and we’ve been talking with them for a while and we notified North Queensland a while ago those talks were ongoing,” Ayoub said last night. “Given the opportunity that existed and the arrangement we had with North Queensland, we decided to take up the offer overseas, and Jade’s very much looking forward to it.”

Griffiths to Gold Coast

Gold Coast United has continued it’s impressive recruitment drive by signing Adam Griffiths on a three year deal.

The versatile defender is the ninth signing for the Gold Coast club.

The Newcastle Jets have now lost two fringe socceroos after the recent announcement of Jade North heading to North Queensland Fury.

NZ Government set to block out Jets’ sponsor

The Newcastle Jets have been notified that advertising regulations state that it is an offence to advertise the club’s major sponsor Centrebet in New Zealand.

Newcastle travels to New Zealand this weekend for an A-League match against Wellington Phoenix.

According to this morning’s notification, “gaming in New Zealand is controlled by the Gambling Act 2003 (’Act’). Section 16 of the Act makes it an offence to advertise an overseas gambling operator, of which CentreBet is one.”

Jets CEO, John Tsatsimas, hoped he could reach a compromise with the New Zealand Government.

“The club is considering the options available in order to resolve this issue and form an appropriate outcome for all concerned organisations.”

“It is unfortunate that we have received this notification, but we have immediately entered into discussions with the New Zealand Government,” Mr. Tsatsimas said.

Van Egmond cops FFA sanction

Football Federation Australia has announced today that Newcastle Jets’ coach Gary van Egmond has been found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute.

Van Egmond was found guilty of breaching clause 2.1 of the FFA National Code of Conduct and was issued a sanction for four matches and a fine of $2,000.

However two of the matches and the fine have been suspended until the end of the 2008-09 Finals series due to “van Egmond’s contrition, unreserved apology and previous exemplary record.”

Therefore the Jets’ coach will serve a two match suspension unless he re-offends this season, with the sanction applying to rounds 12 and 13 of the A-League.

Van Egmond will be restricted in his access to players, the field of play and media within a five hour period on match days.
