FORMER Melbourne Victory player Sebastian Ryall has been charged with engaging in a sexual act with a 13-year-old girl.

The charge arises out of an incident in January 2008, when Ryall was aged 18.

Ryall, who was scheduled to leave on Saturday with the Australian under-20 team for a camp in the Netherlands, recently transferred to Sydney from Melbourne Victory.

He has been suspended by Football Federation Australia from participation in soccer matches in Australia, including the A-League, until September 3.

He is also ineligible to participate in national team competition until the criminal case has been determined, or September 2009, whichever is the later.

Ryall has pleaded not guilty to the charge and his lawyer said he would strenuously defend his innocence.

FFA chief executive Ben Buckley said the matter involving Ryall was brought to the attention of the sport’s ruling body and Sydney FC on April 23.

He said the matter had not been publicly disclosed until now because the issue had to be discussed with the player and his legal representatives, his club and the FFA’s lawyers.

Buckley said the FFA hadn’t formed a view of the player’s innocence or guilt, stressing that the sanction was imposed on the basis that the criminal charge had brought the game into disrepute.

Ryall has seven days to appeal the FFA decision.

Ryall was sanctioned following a finding under clause 2.1 of the FFA’s code of conduct that he had brought the game into disrepute through being charged with a criminal offence.

Barcelona could be the next big name club to head to Australia for a friendly match theworldgame.com.au has reported...

Barcelona could be the next big name club to head to Australia for a friendly match theworldgame.com.au has reported.

Hot on the heels of English Premier League sides Fulham and Wolverhampton, who have confirmed matches against North Queensland, Perth and the Gold Coast in July, and Scottish giants Celtic, the Spanish superstars are rumoured to also be interested in taking on the A-League’s finest.

TWG understands the Catalans have met Sydney FC officials to discuss a possible midweek match up in August, with another club – believed to be Melbourne Victory – also in the frame.

Given the proposed blockbuster would not be until after the start of the A-League season, it is understood there are still some scheduling details to be arranged.

A source close to Sydney FC has confirmed the high profile interest and suggested that Barcelona had initially expressed a desire to come in July before the start of the A-League, but have had to revise their plans.

The game would be a huge boon for the profile of the A-League, with Barcelona boasting a host of international stars and on the cusp of winning Spain’s La Liga.

Fresh from a 6-2 obliteration of fierce rivals Real Madrid, the Catalans, who have been lauded for their free-flowing football this season, are also still in contention for the Champions League final.

Frank Lowy has sold his controlling interest in Sydney FC to Russian banker David Traktovenko and media and healthcare owner Paul Ramsay.

Traktovenko and Ramsay have announced that they will become the major shareholders in Sydney FC with an equal and combined shareholding of 74 per cent at the completion of the current A-League season.

Mr Ramsey said that he would like to make a long-term contribution to football in Australia.

“I would also like to involve myself in the club, personally and through my business interests, and how it engages with children to make a positive contribution to young people in the community,” said Ramsey.

Traktovenko added: “Sydney FC has the most passionate and committed fans in the A-league and is ideally placed to grow its following and performance. I am excited to become more involved with the club’s direction.”

Traktovenko is the former owner and chairman of Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg and will continue to be represented on the Sydney FC board by his son-in-law Scott Barlow.

Frank Lowy retains a minor shareholder at the club.

Adelaide United FC has secured the services of current Sydney FC defender Iain Fyfe from next season.

Adelaide United FC has secured the services of current Sydney FC defender Iain Fyfe from next season.

The 26-year old defender penned a three year contract with the Reds which sees him officially start at the club on April 1, 2009.

United Football Director Michael Petrillo said that Fyfe’s would bring experience and versatility to the Adelaide squad.

“To be able to pick up a player who has played in a winning championship side with Sydney FC, had Asian Champions League experience, and still be only 26 years of age, was definitely one of the reasons we signed him,” Petrillo said.

“He is a proven winner, a terrific young man and there is no doubt he will be a great addition to our defence. He will bring experience, versatility and a great character to our playing group.

“We’re looking forward to having Iain join us in April and welcoming home another talented South Australian to Adelaide United Football Club.”

Fyfe grew up playing in Adelaide at local club Salisbury United before joining Adelaide City in the old NSL. He was a member of Sydney FC’s 2005/06 championship winning squad and has played a total of 79 A-League appearances during his stint at Sydney FC.
