Corica to captain Sydney FC

In the wake of the departure of Tony Popovic, the logical choice was made when Steve Corica was handed the captaincy at Sydney FC.

It should come as no shock, as the 35-year-old has captained the Sky Blues during Popovic’s injury-enforced absences this season, although the circumstances of how it came about certainly surprised Corica.

“It is an honour to be captain of Sydney,” said Corica.

“Tony did a fantastic job for the club and Australia and it’s obviously a privilege to take over the captaincy role from him.”

“With Tony having another year left on his contract, I definitely didn’t expect it now. It’s nice though and a great privilege to lead one of the nation’s biggest football clubs.”

Corica will lead Sydney FC out against the Adelaide United next Saturday at Hindmarsh Stadium.
