Football friendly between Socceroos v South Africa in London

Socceroos Celebrate

AUSTRALIAN football blockbusters are set to continue when the Socceroos are set to face off against 2010 World Cup hosts, South Africa. The match is scheduled for Craven Cottage in London on August 19, 2008.

Raymond Hack, the South African football chief confirmed today that the two countries will meet for only the sixth time post-apartheid.

The record between the two nations sees the Socceroos winning three, losing one and drawing another. The two teams also met in London 2004 where Australia won 1-0 thanks to a Mark Bresciano cracker.

Australia also faced off against the South Africans in February 2005. That game ended in a 1-1 draw thanks to a late wonder-strike from the recently injured Scott Chipperfield after Benni McCarthy had slotted an goal.

South Africa will be using this match to try and find some form ahead of their African Nations Cup qualifying matches. They are in danger of missing out on the tournament which will be held before the World Cup which would be a major embarrassment to the SAFA.
