Gold Coast United to take on EPL’s Fulham FC

MARK Schwarzer’s Fulham is bound for the Glitter Strip and a glamour clash against Clive Palmer’s Gold Coast United.

The July 9 duel at Skilled Park will pit Socceroo against Socceroo with Fulham keeper Schwarzer up against United’s marquee magician Jason Culina in a game Palmer expects to attract an audience in excess of 20,000.

The London side, whose Australian tour will also take in a pit-stop against Melbourne Victory on July 11, are seventh in the English Premier League and on course for a European place next season.

It’s believed it will cost United $300,000-plus to stage the clash, a significant portion of which could be recouped through gate takings.

United CEO Clive Mensink declared last night: “We have agreed in principle to play Fulham for what we believe will be a superb way for us to make our entrance to Skilled Park.”

United’s bullish billionaire boss Palmer, who has also earmarked pre-season games against New Caledonia, Singapore and Hong Kong, added: “We’ll have our top squad together by then (for the Fulham clash) and it will be two very good sides facing each other. If we beat them, then we’d fancy ourselves against anybody.”

United were keen for the match not to clash with Brisbane Roar’s date with Scottish giants Celtic at Suncorp Stadium on July 12.

United took their first steps towards their A-League debut in a friendly against local outfit Mudgeeraba last night.

Played before a healthy crowd, it was strictly one-way traffic as United cruised home 12-1 in the first in a series of pre-season practice matches.

United’s gun striker Shane Smeltz gave a sign of what fans can expect in the A-League as he went on a nine-goal spree.

The other United scorers were Steve Pantelidis, Steve Fitzsimmons and Golly Mebrahtu.
