Socceroos can’t handle the heat against Iraq

Socceroos World Cup

AUSTRALIA has gone down 1-0 to Iraq this morning in their World Cup qualifying match but they still remain top of Group A alongside Qatar who earlier defeated China by the same scoreline.
Highlights: Australia v Iraq in Duabi

Emad Mohammed scored a curling cracker from 25-yards out but Schwarzer was a little to blame as he drifted off his line. In truth Australia created little in the way of chances and were a disappointment to watch.

The 28th-minute strike puts Iraq back into contention to qualify for the next round of Asian World Cup qualifying. Iraq now have four points while China are still without a win on three points with two matches to go.

Pim Verbeek chose to play Harry Kewell as a lone striker and also opted for two defensive midfielders in the hope of sneaking an away points but the plan backfired just before the half-hour mark when Mohammed stunned the Aussies with a curling cross-shot from way out.

Australia’s best chance fell to Brett Holman on the hour mark when Kewell backhealed into his path but his left-footed shot was easily saves by the keeper.

David Carney had a last-minute chance to grab a point for the Socceroos when his shot was cleared off the line but it wasn’t top be for Green and Gold who have now suffered their first defeat and first conceded goal under Pim Verbeek.

It doesn’t get easier as Australia now travel to Doha where they will play Qatar in similar conditions this coming Saturday.
