Ghana fan shocked at no national anthem

MILE Sterjovski got the only goal of the game just one minute into the second half to allow Pim Verbeek to continue his unbeaten run for the Aussie national team. The international friendly match against Ghana was played at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday night.

This was Australia’s sixth meeting against the Ghanaians at senior international level and their fifth win against the “Black Stars”, in what was their final hit-out before their World Cup qualifier against Iraq in Brisbane on June 1.

Harry Kewell captained for only the second time in his 30-0dd appearances for the green and gold in front of around 30,000 spectators in a team missing most of their Euro-Stars like Mark Bresciano, Tim Cahill, Vince Grella, Lucas Neill, Brett Emmerton and Scott McDonald.

Kewell, who has had limited first-team football this year was subbed off after 73 minutes in preparation for next weeks Asian Cup rematch against Iraq.

Australia looked decent during the first half but were unable to penetrate the Ghana defence as the West Africans showed their class.

Against the flow of the game, Sterjovksi punished a defensive error by Captain John Mensah with a run towards goal and a cracking finish from a tight angle towards the far post.

But Mile Sterjovski became the villain in the 87th minute when he was given his marching orders for a second yellow card for shirt pulling.

The match commenced with embarrassment on behalf of the FFA when ground organisers couldn’t seem to start a recording of the Ghana national anthem. It was eventually played but not until just before the commencement of the 2nd-half.
