Socceroos to face Ghana in Sydney Friendly

Ghana Football AssociationAustralia is booked in to play a friendly match against African football team, Ghana. The match will take place on 23 May, 2008 at the Sydney Football Stadium. This match is a warm-up to their all important World Cup Qualifying matches where they will have to play 4 games in a month.

Australia will be able to call up most of their European contingent for this match but will miss the important Everton player Tim Cahill who will be out for the rest of the season with a broken foot.

The two nations have only met once before at senior level and that was in London back in November, 2006. The score ended 1-1. Ghana is ranked 15th in the world while the Socceroos are currently 38th.

Ghana made their World Cup debut in 2006 alongside Australia’s second entry into the tournament. They also reached the knockout stage but fell 3-0 to Brazil in the round of 16.

The Ghanians are expected to name a full strength Euro-Based squad for the match but could lose the services of their star midfielder Michael Essien if Chelsea somehow reach the Champions league final which is to be held in Moscow.

Australia will continue their World Cup Qualifying matches on 1 June, 2008 where they will face Iraq in Brisbane. The Socceroos will then head to Dubai to face Iraq once again on 7 June and then Qatar in Doha on June 14. They will complete their first round campaign with a home match against China at ANZ stadium, Sydney on Jun 22.
